This is not just a personal story. It’s the origin of a new way to think about life strategy.

One Year in Thailand, 30 Days with Monks

Thailand, 2009. My residence – Naiharn Beach, Rawai, Phuket.

I’m sitting cross-legged on a wooden platform in the mountains of Northern Thailand, surrounded by forest monks who’ve devoted their entire lives to one question: What does it mean to live well?

I’m on disability leave my employer. My life is unraveling. My marriage is failing. I’ve relocated seventeen times in my career. I have more achievements than I can count and more emptiness than I care to admit.

But I’m not here for thirty days. I’m here for a year.

Thirty days with these monks. Thirty days in a mind/body/spirit detox center. Ninety days working through NLP and EFT to address what I now recognize as a potentially dangerous mid-life crisis. The rest of the days were spent enjoying the beach or traveling the country.

The monks keep asking me one question:

“What are you moving toward?”

For the first time in my life, I didn’t have an answer.

What I found in that year became the foundation of the ONELife origin story.

The Path That Got Me There

Let me back up.

I’m MJ. And my life has been anything but linear.

By 2009, I’d lived through:

• Two divorces that brought me to my knees

• Bankruptcy at 31, rebuilding from nothing

• Losing my mother at 23, right when I needed direction most

• Four children across three generations

• Family alcoholism teaching me hard lessons about care vs. control

• Seventeen geographic relocations across 3 continents

• Nine US states, eight international cities, seven countries lived in

• Forty countries visited for work and pleasure

• Twenty startups launched (batting .500)

• Thirty employers, countless roles, more wobbles than wins

My career looked impressive from the outside. IBM executive. Global roles. C-suite positions.  Co-founder of my first startup with a successful exit.

But inside? I was coming apart. Exhausted. Overloaded. Disconnected from what mattered most.

The mid-life crisis hit like a freight train. Not the “buy a sports car” version. The dangerous kind. The kind where you’re not sure you’re going to make it out.

I knew I needed more than a vacation. I needed a complete reset.

So I took a year. Thailand. 2009.

What I Found in Thailand: A Year of Rebuilding

That year broke down into three distinct phases:

Phase 1: 30 Days with Forest Monks

The monks didn’t give me answers. They gave me space.

Thirty days of silence will do something to you. All the noise falls away. All the roles you’ve been playing – executive, father, husband, achiever – they start to dissolve.

What’s left is just you. And the question: What actually matters?

No phone. No email. No goals. No meetings. Just sitting. Walking. Meditating. Being.

Dealing with Pythons so big and scary – ones who look at my 203cm frame and think “he’s a meal that will keep me full for a year.”

The monks taught me something profound: Clarity doesn’t come from adding more. It comes from letting go.

💡 This insight became the philosophical core of ONELife: subtraction before strategy.

Phase 2: 30 Days of Mind/Body/Spirit Detox

After the monks, I moved to a mind/body/spirit detox center.

This wasn’t about substances. This was about detoxing from achievement. From accumulation. From the decades of “more” that had left me overloaded:

• Too many goals

• Too many screens

• Too many versions of myself

• Too many unprocessed emotions

• Too many unfinished chapters

Thirty days of physical, emotional, and spiritual cleansing. Fasting. Movement. Stillness. Processing.

By the end, I could finally see clearly.

Phase 3: 90 Days of NLP and EFT

Seeing clearly and healing completely are two different things.

I spent ninety days working with NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) and EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) to address the mid-life crisis that had brought me to Thailand in the first place.

This was the dangerous part. The part where, without intervention, men my age make catastrophic decisions. Leave marriages. Blow up careers. Self-destruct.

NLP helped me reprogram the thought patterns that had been running my life unconsciously for decades.

EFT helped me release the accumulated emotional weight: grief from losing my mother, shame from bankruptcy, pain from failed marriages, no clue on how to be the best divorced father, fear that I’d never get it right.

Ninety days. Layer by layer. Pattern by pattern. Until I could finally breathe.

Four Insights That Changed Everything

Over the course of that year – monks, detox, NLP/EFT – four insights emerged:

👉 One Phone, One Life

This was 2009. The iPhone had just launched two years earlier. Suddenly, work and personal life existed on the same device. No separation. No boundary.

At first, that felt like a problem. But sitting in Thailand, I realized: Work and life were never separate. That separation was always an illusion.

There’s only ever been one life. We just divided it artificially and called it “balance.”

👉 Strategy Isn’t Just for Business

I’d spent decades applying strategic thinking to companies, products, and markets. But my personal life? That was reactive. Chaotic. Fragmented.

Why?

The tools I used in business – strategy, objectives, frameworks, systems – they weren’t “business tools.” They were life tools.

I’d just never applied them to the thing that mattered most: my actual life.

👉 Balance Was Always the Wrong Metaphor

We talk about work-life balance like it’s two sides of a scale. One goes up, the other goes down. Forever trying to find equilibrium on something that never stops moving.

But life isn’t a bicycle with two wheels.

It’s a unicycle.

One wheel. One system. And you stay upright not by standing still, but by moving forward with awareness and alignment.

👉 Strategy Is Rhythm

The monks lived by rhythm. Not rigid schedules, but consistent practices. Morning meditation. Walking meditation. Evening reflection.

Life strategy isn’t about perfect planning. It’s about rhythm. Showing up consistently. Adjusting as you go. Staying aligned to what matters.

Why I Built ONELife

I left Thailand in 2010 with clarity I hadn’t felt in years.

But then life happened. I went back to work. The insights started to fade.

I tried to hold onto what I’d learned. Journaled. Meditated. Set intentions.

But without a system – without structure and rhythm – those insights became just another set of good ideas I didn’t consistently apply.

Over the next fifteen years, I kept coming back to that year in Thailand. What made that experience so transformative wasn’t just the insights. It was the structure.

Thirty days with monks who had a system for living aligned lives.

Thirty days in a detox program with a structured approach to releasing what no longer served.

Ninety days of NLP and EFT with frameworks for rewiring thought patterns and emotional responses.

Structure. Systems. Frameworks.

That’s what was missing from modern life.

We have productivity apps that optimize tasks. Fitness apps that track workouts. Finance apps that monitor spending. Meditation apps that time our breathing.

But nothing that sits above all of it, ensuring everything works together.

Nothing that asks: Are all eight domains of your life moving in the same direction? Or are you optimizing parts while your whole life fragments?

So I built ONELife, completing the ONELife origin story I had begun in Thailand.

The operating system I wish I’d had before the divorces. Before the bankruptcy. Before I needed a year in Thailand to put myself back together.

I’m 67 now. My adult years are 45.

I’ve lived in all their realities. My four children across three generations remind me that the old rules don’t work anymore.

You can’t follow one career path for 40 years. You can’t separate work from life when they exist on the same device. You can’t achieve balance on a system that’s constantly moving.

But you can create alignment. You can build strategy. You can live with rhythm and purpose.

That’s what ONELife makes possible.

What I Know Now

After 45 years of boardrooms and breakrooms, success and bankruptcy, global moves and personal collapses, one year in Thailand rebuilding from the ground up – I’ve learned this:

The question was never, “Do you live to work, or work to live?”

The truth is simpler:

There is only one life.

The better question is:

“Is your life unified, aligned, and in rhythm?”

If it’s not, you don’t need better balance.
