“Don’t Stop Believin'”: What Journey Taught Me About Life Strategy

Author:

Some songs refuse to let go. Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin'” hit the radio in 1981, one year after college graduation and the marriage to my first wife, but it followed me through seven countries, seventeen relocations, and more fresh starts than I can count. Every time I boarded a midnight train going anywhere, literally and metaphorically, that opening piano riff was there. Small town kid. Big world. No map. Just belief.

The Midnight Train to Nowhere and Everywhere

“Just a small town girl, living in a lonely world. She took the midnight train going anywhere.”

I’ve taken that train. Bahrain in 1990 with two suitcases and zero certainty. Bangkok in 2009 after my life fell apart. Shanghai, Hong Kong, Singapore, Manila, London, Paris, and back to the States. Every move was a bet on something I couldn’t see yet. No guarantee. Just belief that the next city, the next startup, the next chapter would make sense.

👉 Here’s what I learned: The midnight train doesn’t need a destination. It needs direction.

Most people freeze because they’re waiting for certainty. But you can’t solve your future. There’s no data. That’s where life strategy comes in. Purpose (where you’re heading), Values (what guides you), Principles (how you decide). The POST framework isn’t a map. It’s a compass.

Streetlight People in the Fragment Economy

“Streetlight people, living just to find emotion, hiding somewhere in the night.”

Steve Perry wrote about working-class strivers in 1981. Forty-four years later, we’re all streetlight people. Gen X delaying retirement. Millennials crushed by student debt and housing costs. Gen Z stressed and anxious 40% of the time. We’re all hiding somewhere in the night, chasing emotion, chasing meaning, chasing something that feels like home.

💡 The problem isn’t that we’re searching. The problem is we’re searching in fragments.

Work app. Fitness app. Budget app. Meditation app. We optimize each domain separately while the whole life pulls apart. ONELife is the shift: eight domains, one strategy, one direction. Not balance. Alignment.

The Song Goes On and On and On

“It goes on and on and on and on.”

That’s the part nobody talks about. The song doesn’t end with arrival. It ends with continuation. On and on and on. Because life isn’t a project with a finish line. It’s a system to sustain.

I’m 67 now. I’ve helped build over twenty startups. Failed more than I’ve succeeded. Learned that the rhythm matters more than the result. The unicycle stays upright by moving, not by standing still.

👉 Progress isn’t about reaching the top. It’s about staying in motion, aligned to purpose, without burning out.

That’s the ONELife rhythm. Not sprinting toward some fantasy finish line. Just moving forward, day after day, with your eight domains aligned to the same purpose.

Don’t Stop Believin’ (Even When There’s No Map)

“Don’t stop believin’, hold on to that feelin’.”

Journey’s anthem works because it doesn’t promise arrival. It promises continuation. Keep believing. Hold on. The feeling matters more than the destination.

But here’s what I learned after bankruptcy at 31, two divorces by 50, and years in the messy middle: belief without strategy is hope. Belief WITH strategy is direction.

You don’t stop believing. But you align what you believe IN.

That’s the difference between the midnight train going anywhere and the midnight train going somewhere that matters to YOU.

Belief as Fuel, Strategy as Direction

In 2009, I sat in a monastery in Thailand with nothing left. No money. No marriage. No plan. Just belief that there had to be another way to live. The forest monks taught me: belief moves you forward. But intention gives you direction.

ONELife was born from that year. Not from certainty. From belief that life could work as one system instead of competing fragments.

Your Life Strategy Intelligence (LSI) score measures alignment across eight domains:

  • Work & Career: Are you building toward purpose or just paying bills?
  • Health: Is your body supporting your journey or breaking down from neglect?
  • Finances: Are you managing resources or drowning in stress?
  • Relationships: Are you connected or isolated in the crowd?
  • Growth & Learning: Are you evolving or stuck?
  • Environment: Does your space support your life or drain it?
  • Hobbies: Do you have outlets for joy and energy?
  • Giving Back: Are you contributing beyond yourself?

When these eight domains align with your purpose, the ride gets easier. Not perfect. Easier.

The Journey Continues

Steve Perry never tells you where the midnight train arrives. Because it doesn’t arrive. It keeps going. On and on and on.

That’s life. That’s the unicycle. You stay upright by moving, not by reaching some mythical finish line where everything’s solved.

Don’t stop believin’. But believe in something aligned to who you actually are.

Hold on to that feeling. But build a system that sustains it.

The song goes on and on and on. So does your life. Make it count.

Why ONELife Is Different: Beyond Balance, Integration, and Assessment

For 120 years we’ve been asking: work to live or live to work? The Wheel of Life (1960) gave us assessment. Total Leadership (2000) gave us integration. Both still treated life as separate pieces. ONELife provides true unification: one life, eight domains, complete strategic architecture. Not bicycle to better bicycle. Bicycle to unicycle.
